Psychic Is Not a Dirty Word: Embracing Intuition Without the Stereotypes
Share
When you hear the word psychic, what comes to mind?
For many, it’s an image shaped by Hollywood and late-night TV commercials—dimly lit rooms, heavy purple drapes, a mysterious woman peering into a crystal ball, whispering cryptic messages about fate. It’s a scene straight out of a carnival sideshow, dripping in theatrics and mystery.
I’ve always been able to spot a fake from a mile away—the overly dramatic statements, the reliance on vague but emotionally charged phrases, the carefully structured wording designed to make anyone feel seen without actually saying anything specific. The performance aspect of it all frustrated me, not because people sought guidance, but because I knew I could do what they claimed to do—without the gimmicks.
I never needed the velvet tablecloths, the mystical ambiance, or the fortune-teller persona.
And yet, I found myself questioning whether I should lean into those expectations just to be taken seriously.
“You Don’t Look Like a Psychic Medium”
One of the most memorable moments in my journey was when someone looked me up and down and said, “You don’t look like a psychic medium.”
I paused. What does a psychic medium look like?
Their response was something along the lines of, “I don’t know… you just look normal.”
That moment stuck with me. It made me realize just how deeply ingrained the stereotypes around psychic work had become. Somewhere along the way, people had been conditioned to expect a certain “look” or behavior from anyone in the spiritual field. If I wasn’t draped in flowing skirts, covered in crystals, and whispering in hushed tones, could I still be legitimately psychic?
That question lingered in my mind for a while. And then, I faced an even bigger challenge—one that forced me to confront my own doubts and insecurities about the label of “psychic.”
When the Word “Psychic” Became a Problem
Not long after that encounter, I received an email from my insurance company. They had reviewed my application and informed me that they would not cover me if I used the word "psychic" in my business.
Their reasoning? The term was “too controversial.”
That moment shook me.
How could a word so deeply connected to my purpose be deemed problematic? Suddenly, it felt like using the term “psychic” would make me seem untrustworthy or illegitimate in the eyes of the world. I felt forced to pivot, choosing to identify more strongly with mediumship instead. After all, mediumship was more widely accepted. It carried an element of proof—clear, direct communication with those who had passed. It wasn’t as “mystical” or “unpredictable” as psychic work.
I told myself that this was the better route, the safer route.
But the universe had other plans.
A Spiritual Lesson in Disguise
If you’ve ever trained in the spiritual field, you know that our guides don’t just hand us wisdom on a silver platter. They prefer to teach through experience—and sometimes, those lessons are tough.
Because I had dismissed the psychic aspect of my work, my spirit team decided to make a point.
They shut off my mediumship abilities.
Just like that, the channel that allowed me to connect with spirits went silent. No messages from the other side. No whispers from passed loved ones. Nothing.
All I had left was my psychic intuition.
At first, I panicked. How could I continue my work if I couldn’t communicate with spirits?
How would I validate my readings? But as I leaned into my psychic abilities, something incredible happened.
I realized that my intuition was stronger than I had ever given it credit for.
Embracing the Psychic Within
Without mediumship as my crutch, I had to rely on my intuitive gifts in their purest form. I started reading people on a much deeper level, tuning into their energy in ways I hadn’t before.
Clients came to me expecting messages from loved ones, and instead, they walked away with insights that changed their lives. I helped them uncover patterns they hadn’t noticed, recognize emotional wounds they hadn’t fully processed, and find clarity on decisions they had been struggling with.
For many, it was the first time they truly felt seen.
I realized then that being psychic wasn’t just about “seeing the future.” It wasn’t just about predictions or tarot cards.
It was about transformation.
It was about helping people navigate life’s challenges with deeper awareness.
It was about uncovering truths that had been buried beneath fear and doubt.
It was about guiding people toward healing, self-discovery, and empowerment.
And the most unexpected part? I loved it.
Reclaiming the Word “Psychic”
Months later, when my mediumship abilities finally returned, I understood why my guides had led me through that experience.
I had been so focused on proving myself as a legitimate medium that I had dismissed a fundamental part of who I was. By forcing me to rely solely on my psychic abilities, my spirit team showed me that my intuition was just as powerful—if not more so—than my mediumship.
I had finally embraced all aspects of my gifts, without fear, shame, or the need for external validation.
And in that moment, I decided:
I will never let the word “psychic” be a dirty word again.
Breaking the Stereotype
Psychic work isn’t about smoke and mirrors. It isn’t about making people dependent on readings or selling fear-based solutions. It isn’t about theatrics or manipulation.
There are incredibly talented, ethical, and highly professional psychics out there who are changing lives—without the costumes, without the exaggerated personas, and without the need to “prove” anything.
Authenticity is what matters.
At Soulfully Aligned, I honor both my psychic and mediumship abilities to bring my clients the clarity, connection, and transformation they need—without the gimmicks.
